There will be no fishing Chesil this morning, but I am gambling on it being almost perfect this afternoon. I checked the wind forecast just about every hour yesterday, to see if there would be any movement in the time when the wind was predicted to drop. Hopefully it will drop before midday, then turn to blow from the north. This will effectively help to calm the sea down quite quickly. I fished just a few hours after the storm back in October when the same wind change occurred. Back then it was much rougher with waves of 5.5m. today the waves are currently less than 4m, but until they do drop it would be almost suicidal to fish Chesil. When the storm subsided enough last time I was able to get a few Cod. I am hoping for the same again today.
The next question I have to ask is where to fish today. I have two marks that have fished well for me for Cod this year, but on my last two sessions, I guessed wrong and ended up with nothing but Whiting and Pout, whilst at my other location, my mate was doing very well. It is going to be a toss up between Cogden and the bird sanctuary at Ferrybridge. Unfortunatly none of the tackle shops have been able to get any Peeler crab this weekend, so I will have to make do with fresh Blow Lug, Squid and Mackerel.
Those of you fishing after work today are probably going to have the best of the conditions, but for me I will only be fishing up to 5.30. I may be fishing again tomorrow afternoon, but looking at the forecast and following from what has happened in similar conditions this year, it is most likely all I will get is Dogfish, Pout and maybe some Whiting.
I wish I was able to do a live Hangouts on air broadcast from the beach, to show you the conditions, but I am almost certain that I wont be able to do it from my iPhone because of low signal levels, but I will give it a try. I will post updates via Facebook and Google+ to let you know when it becomes fishable. If you want to see those updates then you can find links to access all my social media feeds in the top right hand side of this page.
Because of the weather over the weekend, I didn’t see too many anglers out at many of the alternative marks. I know a few fished Stone Pier and Preston beach. Most catches were made up of Pout, Whiting and a few Flounder.
Sea Conditions:
Water temperature 10.4*c.
Chesil Beach: Currently unfisshable, but should be fishable with care from 1.30pm. Coloured water.
Portland: Rough with coloured water.
Portland Harbour: Wavelets with lightly coloured water
Weymouth Bay: Small waves with lightly coloured water
Chesil Beach forecast: Good luck. If you get there when the conditions are right, this will be one your best chances for a good Bass or Cod this year. WHen it calms down a bit then expect Pout, Dogfish and Whiting during the day and night. You need to use big smelly baits in this dirty water. Live Peeler or Hermit crabs work the best. Lugworm would be my next favourite bait.
Portland: It will be hard fishing, but there is always the chance of a Bull Huss or Bass. Marks on the East side will be your safest option. Church Ope has a lot of weed in it at the moment.
Portland Harbour:Hamm Beach and Sandsfoot Castle are good spots once Chesil becomes too rough. Ferrybridge normally becomes too busy as it is such a small mark. There are plenty of Flounder in the harbour.
Weymouth Bay: Preston Beach will be the most sheltered mark from Saturday afternoon. At this time of year expect small Bass, Dabs and Flounder during the day, and plenty of Whiting after dark.
Poole: Leo managed to get out this weekend, and he reports that the Flounder fishing in Poole harbour is really starting to pick up. Plenty of nice heavy Flounder are showing from all over the harbour. The main problem is getting through the hundreds of tiny Bass. Hopefully that is a good sign for the future of Bass fishing.
Guiding & Lessons: Even though the Bass fishing should run all the way through to mid December and maybe even later, depending on the water temperature, I will be mainly switching to guiding for winter species. Most of my trips will be Wrasse fishing for the large fish from rough ground, , or from the beaches for Cod and Whiting. Have a look on the guiding link at the top of the page or drop me an email for more details to [email protected]
