What a huge variety of fish have been caught over the past few days. Everything from Red Mullet to Cod and all caught on a variety of baits and lures. Hermit Crab seems to have been todays favourite bait. Maybe that was just because almost everyone that I talked to seemed to have Hermits. At a quarter of the cost of Fresh Peeler I am surprised more people don’t use them. I think they are a great bait at any time of the year, but Cod, Bass and Smoothound love them.
Water Temperature: 14.9*c Weymouth High Tide: 2.30pm, 1.56m
Wind: E 15mph.
Sea Conditions:
Chesil Beach: Calm with a 2m swell, the water has a green milky tinge to it.
Portland: Choppy on the East side and around the Bill. West side is calm with a 2m swell. The water clarity is good
Portland Harbour: Small waves with slightly coloured water.
Weymouth Bay: Small to medium size waves but the water is pretty coloured especially on Preston Beach where there is a lot of surf.
Chesil Beach forecast: The Cod are still being landed on the beach and some of them are huge. The picture below is a 19lb Cod landed at Abbotsbury. I have also heard reports of a 24lb fish from Cogden, but this is unconfirmed. It is not only Cod that are being caught but some lovely Autumn Plaice and cracking Bream. A few Mackerel may be caught when the water clears a bit more.
Portland: The Wrasse will move back in and be very hungry. Ragworm and crab baits will take plenty of fish, but if you want some great sport then target them using soft plastic lures. Blue, gold and green are very effective colours and the chance of a big Wrasse is always on the cards in the next couple of months. Pollock are around in decent numbers.
Portland Harbour: I did have a go for the Bass on Monday in the harbour and was pleasantly surprised to find a few taking surface lures. Peeler Crab and large squid baits often work well at this time of year.
Weymouth Bay: Plenty of fishing coming from both piers and reports suggest that there is a few Squid and Cuttlefish around now. It seems as if everything is early this year.
Boat & Kayak fishing: Most of the Charter fleet are fishing the Conger Championships this week. This means that not many boats will be targeting the Shambles or the reefs around it. This year has been one of the best for a long time for Plaice.
Guiding: I have a couple of more sessions available in October mainly for Bass fishing but I might be persuaded to do a bait session for Cod or a late Plaice. As I mentioned earlier there will be a very few Cod or bait fishing days in October and will be based around what I believe are the best tides. I am taking bookings for both Bass and bait guiding sessions for November. Don’t miss out on the best months fishing. These can be tailored to your requirements including mixed days of bait and lure fishing. Drop me an email for more details [email protected]
