It looks like another couple of days where we can’t get onto Chesil, but looking at the wind forecast, that will all change on Sunday, when we can expect the wind to drop off to nothing more than a stiff breeze for a few days. Conditions at the moment are just fishable with care.
Just because you can’t fish Chesil, don’t let that put you off trying some of the other marks. Poole harbour should fish well this weekend with the larger tides. There is a very good chance of getting a big fat Flounder or one of the Bass that still seem to be hanging around the harbour. If like me you are getting fed up with the poor fishing that we normally get at this time of year, then don’t forget that the fresh water fishing can be very good at this time of year.
River and lakes can be very productive and fishing for Pike is regarded to be better in the winter. All we need is for it to stop raining for a bit. I will feature some fresh water fishing next week and if I am lucky I might get some Grayling fishing on the Frome or the Piddle.
Fishing Clubs: A great thing to do at this time of the year is think about joining a fishing club. There are a number in this area, all of which are really good. Clubs attract anglers of all abilities, so don’t think that if you are a novice you will be out of place. This week I am featuring Lyme Regis Sea Angling Club.
It is a family friendly sea fishing club based in the beautiful Dorset town of Lyme Regis. They run competitions and matches throughout the year for both adults and juniors. These are a great place to learn to fish, as well as get tips and advice from the more experienced anglers. Club members get a 10% discount on tackle and supplies from The Tackle Box shop, as well as a reduced fee on participating charter boats on competition days. You can join the club at any time. Annual membership is £12 for adults, £6 for OAPs and Juniors are FREE! To join, simply pop into The Tackle Box shop in Marine Parade, Lyme Regis, or contact the club secretary, Steve Sweet on 01297 445949 or 07836 591084.
Our first Poll
So far we have had a reasonable response to the Poll, but many of you have not voted. You don’t have to sign up or anything time consuming like that. Just vote and you get to choose what we feature in the following weeks. The Poll closes on Monday.

Sea Conditions:
Water temperature 9.8*c.
Chesil Beach: 2m waves with some exceeding 4m. The water is very coloured.
Portland: 2m waves with coloured water.
Portland Harbour: Calm with lightly coloured water
Weymouth Bay: Calm. The water is lightly coloured.
Chesil Beach forecast: Conditions today are just fishable, but it looks like Saturday will be too rough, but far better on Sunday. We are on spring tides at the moment, so chances of a Cod may be higher than they were last week. The usual Dogfish and Pout will be around all day and night, with Whiting moving in after dark. Even when it calms down a bit on Sunday there will not be loads of Cod on the beach, but the few that will turn up are likely to be good ones.
Portland: Because of the coloured water, you are just as likely to get Conger and Bull Huss during the day on Portland. I have no idea if the Wrasse are still around, as they don’t like rough and coloured conditions. They may have stayed as the water temperature is still high for the time of year.
Portland Harbour: It fished badly last weekend, but it normally does on small tides. With a larger tide and the chance to get some shelter, marks such as Sandsfoot Sailing club are likely to produce Flounder and maybe some Bass.
Weymouth Bay: Another mark that has produced plenty of fish over the past week has been Preston Beach. Dabs, Flounder, Bass and Whiting have all been caught. The Stone Pier has produced mainly smaller fish, but a few nice Flounder have been caught in the harbour despite the amount of freshwater coming into it.
Guiding & Lessons: Now that we are well and truly in the grip of winter, most of my guiding trips for the next few months will be bait fishing trips. If the weather settles and the water clears for a week, then I will go for Pollock and Wrasse on lures. If you are thinking of booking a Plaice fishing trip, I am going to be running those from the second week of March. Until then it will be Wrasse from the rocks and Cod trips if the weather allows. Have a look on the guiding link at the top of the page or drop me an email for more details to [email protected]
