Today would be a great day to get out on the beach. Despite the blow yesterday it is pretty settled and almost perfect for Cod. As usual large baits or Peeler Crab will work best. The Bass fishing has slowed up slightly over the past couple of days. I managed 80 Bass in 7 days, but I have only managed 2 in the past two days.

Just to Prove that Chesil is not all about Cod at the moment, I have put up a couple of pictures that I was sent over the weekend. One has come from Leo, who is helping my compile reports from the Poole area. He went out to see if he could catch a Squid from the open beach and sure enough he succeeded with a lovely looking Squid.

Squid from Chesil Beach

Ben Hackett from Oxford came down to try for a Cod, but as many of you found out over the weekend conditions were far from ideal, However his trip was not wasted as he managed a fantastic 3.5lb Plaice on a 4/0 Pennell baited with 2 fresh Peeler Crab.

Water Temperature: 13.2*c             Weymouth High Tide: 7.08pm, 2.18m

Wind: W switching to SW 12mph

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: Calm with a 1m swell causing a bit of backwash. Water is slightly coloured

Portland: Calm with a slight swell. Water is Clear

Portland Harbour: Calm and clear water.

Weymouth Bay: Clam with a little bit of colour in the water.

Chesil Beach forecast: I would expect to see a good variety of species being caught today. Cod, Mackerel, Garfish, Plaice and Bass to name but a few. No need for long casts as a lot of the fish will be in closer than normal. I have not seen much sprat activity this morning, so they may have moved offshore a bit again. Darkness should see some nice Whiting, especially more west towards Abbotsbury. There are reports of Sole appearing in numbers again.

Portland: The clear water will be good for Wrasse and Pollock fishing. Unfortunately a local fishing boat has decided to rape the area around the Bill for Bass. He has had his nets out every day for a week now and reports suggest that he has cleared the area of hundreds of Bass. The next few weeks are the best of the year for big Wrasse. The biggest ones seem to come on large hardback Velvet Swimmer crabs mounted on a 4/0 hook. Rotten bottoms are essential to enable you to keep tackle losses down.

Portland Harbour: It is looking good for Bass, Mullet and Flounder around the harbour. Hamm beach is producing some very nice flounder to Ragworm.

Weymouth Bay: Preston Beach has been producing a lot of Whiting this week and gives you a better option that Chesil if you want to get away from the crowds. The piers are both fishing well for smaller species and there have been a few Squid caught in the evenings.

Purbecks: Areas such as Kimmeridge, Dancing Ledges and Lulworth have all been producing some nice fish. The large spring tides are always the best tides for Bass on lures on these marks. Good catches of Bass, Conger and Bull Huss along with Undulate and Spotted Ray can be had at night. Sand Eel, Peeler Crab and Squid are great baits along that part of the coast.

Poole: Flounder fishing has kicked off in Poole Harbour. Peeler Crab and Ragworm on simple flowing traces seem to work best. Some nice catches of large Bass have been a common by catch, with fish up to 7lb.

Boat and Kayak fishing: Not sure why most of the Charter Fleet seemed to have stayed at home today, conditions look perfect for Bass fishing in the Race and the last chance to take advantage of some nice Bream and Plaice fishing around the Shambles

Guiding:  Due to changes in my schedule I do have a few dates for next week. On one of the days next week I will have a camera crew with me filming one of my guiding sessions. I am not sure at the moment which day that will be, but if you do not want to be involved in any of the filming, then it would be better not to book with me over the next few days. I have a couple of more sessions available in October mainly for Bass fishing but I might be persuaded to do a bait session for Cod or a late Plaice. I am taking bookings for both Bass and bait guiding sessions for November. Don’t miss out on the best months fishing. These can be tailored to your requirements including mixed days of bait and lure fishing. Drop me an email for more details [email protected]
