It is calm and it is going to be sunny, not ideal conditions for fishing , but at least it will be very pleasurable. I apologise for the lack of posts this week, but with such early starts to get out fishing and a boat trip on Tuesday, it has been very hard to find the time to give a proper report. I even had to do some non-fishing work yesterday. I hope to be out on the water all day today and if I am able, I will be out on the Kayak this afternoon. We have my favourite mid sized tides today, which in my opinion are the best set of tides for fishing this area.

Water Temperature: 17*c             Weymouth High Tide: 10.48pm, 1.84

Wind: SE 7mph dropping of then switching to SW 8mph

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: Calm clear with most of the weed gone now.

Portland: Calm and clear.

Portland Harbour: Calm and clear

Weymouth Bay: Calm with clear water

Chesil Beach forecast: It seems the the Western end of the beach is fishing better than the Portland End. Plenty of Plaice and Dabs being caught on Ragworm tipped with squid. Night time sessions have seen a few Sole landed at Cogden alongside plenty of Dogfish. Mackerel and Gurnard are being caught all along the beach, as are Smoothound. The Mackerel are out at distance with the odd single fish a bit closer. Fishing from Portland end of the beach around Ferrybridge and you are more than likely to pick up some nice Bream and maybe a rare Trigger fish. The Trigger fish have been a bit thin on the ground this year. The Bream that are around for the next 6 weeks or so tend to be the better sized fish. I had a report from a well known lady angler that Ferrybridge was producing some very big Garfish to float fished Mackerel strip. If you want to have some fun whilst you are waiting for your Bream bites then don’t forget to pack a float rod and if you can some ground bait to keep the Garfish in your area. The same source also told me that when she fished at the weekend with a few of her friends, they managed 11 different species between them, including a Drogonet.

Portland: Lovely conditions to fish the Bill today. Float fished Ragworm for Wrasse, Mackerel strips ofr Pollock and garfish and lures for everything, especially soft plastic lures like Slug-go’s and Xlayers. If I was only going to fish one place today for a guaranteed fish, it would be the Bill from about 6.30 until dark with a Megabass Metal X Bubblehead to get myself some Pollock. White Sidewinders work almost as well.

Portland Harbour: It is still fishing very well, although this will tail off as the tides become smaller. Plenty of small Bass, Scad, Mackerel, Wrasse and Flounder around the sand bars either side of Ferrybridge.

Weymouth Bay: Both the Stone Pier and the Pleasure Pier will produce fish today. Float fish Mackerel or Ragworm for Wrasse, Pollock Garfish and Mackerel. The Weymouth Juniors will be fishing there tonight.

Boat & Kayak fishing: I have seen some great reports from the Charter Fleet as well as private boats that have managed out this weekend. Some cracking Plaice from the Shambles and a real mixed bag of Bream, Smoothound, Tope and Gurnard. We are off on a boat trip tomorrow so don’t expect an update unless things change dramatically over night. The next 5 hour boat trip will be on Tuesday the 11th of September so if you want to join me then drop me an email to sean@fishingtails.co.uk The cost is £25 for the trip. Rods and Reels can be hired for £10 if you don’t have your own, but numbers are limited for the tackle.

I am hoping to get out on my Kayak this afternoon, as I have seen a lot of Bass moving between the yachts at Sandsfoot. I will let you know how I get on.

I have a few slots available in September for guiding and one to one sessions. These can be tailored to your requirements including mixed days of bait and lure fishing. Drop me an email for more details sean@fishingtails.co.uk
