Almost a repeat of last Saturday, but with better tides this weekend. I just had a look at Chesil and I am glad to say that with care it is fishable. Nice bit of surf running with some big rollers that will hold some nice Bass. However be very aware of the undertow it can be deadly. It is also pretty good at burying all your gear so make sure you keep your line tight to avoid losing your rigs. If you are after Mackerel off the beach then forget it. It is too rough and coloured for the Mackerel.
Wind forecast SW 20mph for this afternoon. Current wind is SW12mph
Water Temperature: 14.1*c Weymouth High Tide: 6.32pm, 1.9m
Sea Conditions:
Chesil Beach: Rough and coloured with waves in excess of 2m a lot of weed in Chesil Cove with the odd raft along the length of the beach
Portland Bill: Rough and Coloured on the West side but not so rough on the East side, but still pretty coloured with a bit of weed especially in the bays.
Portland Harbour: Wavelets with coloured water all the way out to the drop off where it looks clearer.
Weymouth Bay: Wavelets with good water clarity.
Chesil Beach forecast: It has to be good for a Bass. Best bait will be Peeler Crab, but big Mackerel and Squid baits will also be good. There will be plenty of Dogfish and Pout day and night with the water being so coloured. There seems to be quite a few Smoothound around at the moment if you can get a decent cast out beyond the surf.
Portland: It will be too coloured for Wrasse fishing but you might be able to tempt a Bass or Pollock out. If you are brave enough to try a mark on the West side such as Blacknor then you could rewarded with a nice Bull Huss or Bass. This will require heavy weight tactics with 30lb mainline and rotten bottoms a must, but use a large fish bait and you could land a double.
Portland Harbour: With the water coloured it will pretty much hamper any lure fishing. Try Ragworm for Bass and Flounder anywhere along the beach road or behind the Rodwell trail. I see a lot of people fishing the channel at Ferrybridge unsuccessfully. The main problem with fishing the channel is the weed and the force of the flow pushing your bait back to the side. If you do want to fish there then aim for the sand bars that run along the channel or switch to float fishing or lures (not in coloured water) for more success.
Weymouth Bay: Preston should fish well this evening and the piers will not have been effected by the weather yesterday. The piers have been producing some fish this week with numerous species being caught including Mackerel, Pollock, Wrasse, Bass and Garfish.
Boat and Kayak fishing. Not so great for boat fishermen today with the wind still fairly strong. If you keep to the NW corner of Portland Harbour you will keep out of the wind and you should be able to get in amongst some fish. That corner seems to produce more round fish than flat fish. Those fishing from a Kayak could get amongst the yachts and target some Bass on bait.
