Cod and Bass, just as predicted!
I predicted that we would see plenty of Cod and Bass on Thursday, when the sea settled after the blow on Tuesday and Wednesday. It seems on this occasion I got it spot on.
I gave my friend Gavin a tip off as to where I thought he would manage some Cod from the Western end of Chesil. I did say to him that he would need fresh bait, which he managed to get fin the form of live lugworm. The result was two plump Codling, the biggest going 5lb 3oz.
Down the Ferrybridge end, Bradley Price had a good evening with 3 Codling and a Bass. It seems that the Codling are the same year class as the ones we caught last year. The great news is that they have all put on weight, with the average fish being around 4 1/2lb.
Daniel Manvill also managed an 11lb 7oz Bass earlier in the week. It is one of several large Bass that have come from Chesil this week. I did hear several reports of a 13lb fish from Ferrybridge end.
Sea Conditions: Water temperature 17.1°c
Chesil Beach: 1m swell with coloured water
Portland: medium swell with lightly coloured water
Portland Harbour: Calm with clear water
Weymouth Bay: Calm with clear water
Chesil Beach forecast: With a stiff Northerly breeze forecast for the next few days the beach should settle down, and the colour should drop quickly. Not such good news for Bass and COd, but great for Bream, Plaice and Gurnard. I am pretty sure we will see some big Rays come out of Chesil this weekend.
Once the water clears there should be plenty of Mackerel. I was amazed to see anglers fishing for Mackerel yesterday in 3m waves of coloured water.
Portland: Don’t expect Wrasse or Pollock until the water clears enough on Saturday. This time of year normally brings Garfish close to the shore along the Bill area.
Portland Harbour: The harbour should fish well for Bass this weekend, as the tides are perfect. James Young managed a number of nice Bass on lures from his Kayak in only 10ft of water. All came within an hour of low water and all were returned.
Weymouth Bay: The Thin Lipped Mullet in Weymouth harbour are feeding aggressively at the moment. This is due to the amount of food being washed down with the increased fresh water entering the harbour from Radipole lake. Our tech guru Adrain has been down fishing Weymouth and Portland all weekend. He managed 3 Thin Lipped Mullet between 4 and 5lb.
Guiding:
Due to a large number of requests I have freed up a number of additional dates for shore based guiding in the coming 3 months. August to November are by far the best months for fishing, and are normally my busiest times. I will be offering lure and bait fishing for a whole range of species including Bass, Pollock, Rays, Bream, Trigger Fish and Codling.

Abbotsbury also again fished well for codling on Thursday but only if you had fresh lugworm. Over the day I had 8 codling for just under 30lbs with the largest being 4lb 14oz. I fished from 8.30am until 6pm and took most fish about 2 hours after the morning low tide. The first fish came at 9am and the last around 5pm with a bare two hours in the mid afternoon. The cod were full of hermit crab but even though I fished with frozen hermit crab, I only caught cod on lugworm. When I fished with king ragworm I only caught dogfish and pouting. As I ran low on fresh harbour lug I started to combine fresh lug with frozen black lug but I had to wait longer between bites. I only saw two other codling landed and these were on frozen black lug. There were a lot around me who went home empty handed because of the lack of lug. This was almost identical conditions and results to the six codling that I caught in the last week in July, which I sent you a photograph of.
You are so right about the fresh lug. I have always maintained that you need live bait for the best chance of success. Well done on a good session Terry.

Had a day out on Saturday with Luke on Snapper (Very good day), went bream fishing of course I caught a mackerel first hit I did manage a nice bream though, next we went wreck fishing and of course after on GOOD cod I did nothing but loose tackle (9 lots (I ran out of gear)) then we went mackerel fishing and of course being the one that can do anything weird I caught a cod on feathers and yes it took the feather. All in all a damn good day, will go with this guy again (I’ll take a flask though), not really big on making coffee
