What are you doing sat behind your desk on a day like today? Pull a sicky and get yourself down to Chesil, it looks fantastic for a Cod session. The water is very coloured and still pretty lively but with care you can easily fish it. You shouldn’t need to do long casts as the fish will be in pretty close. The forecast wind of 22mph has not arrived yet and even when it does it will be from the NE giving you a fair amount of shelter.

I had an email from Adam Verne, a regular contributor to my reports, telling me of a Cod that his mate Jim Evans managed to catch. Just as predicted in yesterdays forecast, they headed for Abbotsbury with a load of Lugworm. The Lug was taken by a small Rockling which was subsequently wolfed down by a 12lb Cod. Well done guys.

A nice 12lb Cod for Jim Evans that fell to a Rockling live bait

That is what you call a bucket mouth

Water Temperature: 11*c             Weymouth High Tide: 10.03pm, 1.73m

Wind: NE 20mph

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: Choppy with waves of 1.5m and coloured water.

Portland: fairly rough with waves between 1 and 2m. The water is coloured

Portland Harbour: Small chop with coloured water.

Weymouth Bay: Small chop with coloured water.

Chesil Beach forecast: It just screams Cod down on the beach at the moment. Big baits and live baits if you can. Be careful of the swell as the odd rouge wave could exceed 3m. There will be plenty of Whiting, Pout and Dogfish around for the next 24 hours. Look to Abbotsbury or West Bexington for a higher chance of hooking a Cod.

Portland: The Wrasse fishing will be off until the swell settles down a bit, but the Pollock fishing should be good still. Fishing on some of the higher marks on the East side of the Island with a large fish bait could see you hook a decent Cod or a big Bull Huss. Rotten bottom rigs are essential on these marks.

Portland Harbour: With fairly coloured water your fishing in the harbour is going to be limited to the odd Flounder and maybe a bonus small Bass.

Weymouth Bay: Preston Beach will provide a good bit of shelter from the wind and should see plenty of Whiting. I can’t say the same about the Piers. A North Easterly wind is about the worst you can have for lack of shelter on the pier. With lots of fresh water still coming down from the sluice gates at Radipole the harbour is not fishing very well either.

Guiding: Due to the Bass fishing falling off I am only taking bookings for traditional bait fishing sessions for December. I will be targeting Cod, and Whiting from the beach and large Wrasse and Pollock from the shore. I am happy to fit in a few short Pollock and Wrasse lure sessions from the rocks, but these will be limited to 1/2 day or 2 to 3 hour sessions. These can be tailored to your requirements.
