Fishing forecast for Chesil Beach, Portland & Weymouth. 2nd December 2012

We are set for another calm day on the beach again today, but that will all change tomorrow as a strong NW wind will hit us for a few days. Reports coming in suggest that we are back to the normal chances of catching a Cod from Chesil, which is around 50 to 1. If we got a good South Westerly blow it would bring the fish back into the beach again and the catch rates would massively increase. Periods of calm and cold weather are always a good sign for Whiting. There have been a lot of Whiting caught this week and I believe that between them and Dogfish, they will make up the majority of the catches over the next few days.

The colder water has certainly killed of the Bass fishing. They seem to have moved into deeper water or are off chasing the shoals of Sprats. Reports from further West along the coast suggest that the Sprats have moved along there and are likely to shoal up in the channel approaches.

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: Calm with a milky tinge to the water

Portland: Calm with clear water.

Portland Harbour: Calm with good water clarity.

Weymouth Bay: Calm with coloured water.

Chesil Beach forecast: The odd bonus Cod is likely to make an appearance, but the mainstay of the catches will be Whiting, Pout and Dogfish, especially after dark. If you do want to catch some Whiting then the Western end of the beach towards Abbotsbury and Cogden seem to be producing a lot more fish than the Eastern end. If you are looking for more variety then the Portland end of the beach is still producing Pollock, Wrasse and the odd Smoothound.

Portland: If you are after a large Wrasse then Portland is the place to go over the next couple of days. Use large hardback Velvet Swimmer crabs, cut in half and mounted on a 4/0 or 5/0 hook using a rotten bottom. Your gear will need to be heavy to wrestle the Wrasse out of the rough marks that they love. Lure fishing should produce some Pollock with the chance of Bass.

Portland Harbour: Very quite in and around the harbour at the moment. No one seems to be fishing it, with the exception of a few guys lure fishing from Ferrybridge. They have not reported any success there at all.

Weymouth Bay: Although the bay will be sheltered today and the see fairly calm there is a lot of fresh water coming out of the harbour that will have a negative effect on the fishing. The further away from the harbour you can fish the better your chances. Large fish baits or Lug worm fished around Bowleaze Cove may produce a Ray or Bass. Smaller baits will attract Whiting.

Guiding: Due to the Bass fishing falling off I am only taking bookings for traditional bait fishing sessions for December. I will be targeting Cod, and Whiting from the beach and large Wrasse and Pollock from the shore. I am happy to fit in a few short Pollock and Wrasse lure sessions from the rocks, but these will be limited to 1/2 day or 2 to 3 hour sessions. These can be tailored to your requirements.
