Fishing forecast for Chesil Beach, Portland & Weymouth. 27th August 2012

Well here we are on another typical bank holiday Monday. Rainy and over cast, but that wont stop me from getting out and going fishing. I have a lure workshop this afternoon, but after that it will be decision time! Hit the beach for a big Bass or lure fish Portland Harbour and try and get the 2 Bass I need to bring my tally up to 200 Bass for this year on a lure.

Water Temperature: 17.5*c             Weymouth High Tide: 3.38pm, 1.64m

Wind: S 22mph dropping to 15mph this evening

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: still fairly rough with a 1.5-2m swell. Lots of rafts of weed all along the beach and the water is coloured.

Portland: fairly large swell exceeding 2m at times. Plenty of weed in the coves and a fair bit of colour in the water.

Portland Harbour: Wavelets with almost clear water.

Weymouth Bay: Wavelets with clear water.

Chesil Beach forecast: : I wont be fishing for Mackerel with the water being so coloured, but the chance of a nice size Bass is very tempting. Large baits in the surf or Peeler Crab should see a Bass or two landed. Bream are quite happy to continue feeding in these conditions, as are Smoothound. At the western end of Chesil marks such as West Bexington will produce Plaice. Medium sized tides tend to produce longer stretches during which the fish feed. Because of the colour of the water it would be a good idea to use coloured beads to help attract more fish. It is very likely that you will catch Dogfish and Pout during the day.

Portland: Not ideal conditions for fishing the rocks. Bull Huss normally turn up around Blacknor after a blow and if you are willing to put up with large tackle losses then you might also get a large Bass at the same mark. Best baits for both species will be large Mackerel baits.

Portland Harbour: A few school Bass being caught around Ferrybridge on lures and along the beach towards Sandsfoot Sailing Club. You should be able to get some Flounder and Black Bass from the same marks using Ragworm.

Weymouth Bay: Preston Beach is a good mark if you want to get out of the wind and have some comfortable fishing. However due to the numbers of holiday makers on the beach this is a night time only venue at the moment. Some nice Bass and Rays have been landed from it this week.

Both the Stone Pier and the Pleasure Pier will produce fish today. Float fish Mackerel or Ragworm for Wrasse, Pollock Garfish and Mackerel. Fishing down the side and along the legs can produce some unexpected bonus fish, such as Top Knots or John Dory. There will be a meeting for anyone interested in LFR fishing on Tuesday evening starting at 7pm until 10. You don’t have to stay till 10 and you can turn up at any time. Boat & Kayak fishing: I had a good day out on the boat on Tuesday on the first Fishing Tails organised trip. It was good to meet some new faces. We managed a mixed bag of Bream, Pollock, Plaice and of course Mackerel. Fishing both from the boat and Kayak has been very good this week with some nice Black Bream and Brill being landed. Kayak Anglers fishing Portland harbour and around Portland have managed some nice bags of Bass, Pollock and Bream. I am very keen to launch of from Chesil and fish the deep water off the beach. First I need the weather to change and be lovely and calm. I am looking to join up with some experienced Kayak Anglers to fish these more dangerous marks.
