Fishing forecast for Chesil Beach, Portland & Weymouth. 15th October 2012

Reports suggest that for some it was another great weekends fishing, for others it was just another frustrating session on Chesil Beach with very little to show for it. I have to admit I experienced both sides. Friday was a very poor session, despite what seemed to be very good conditions. I ended up sitting bored behind my beach casters watching bait fish being smashed onto the beach by Bass and Mackerel. Saturday had me take a gamble with water clarity conditions and go fishing for the Bass from the beach and I ended up having a good session. Conditions were calm and clear yesterday, not what you really want for a bait fishing session at this time of year, but we managed a nice bag between us including Codling, Mackerel, Garfish and a very large Red Gurnard.

Water Temperature: 14.5*c             Weymouth High Tide: 7.27pm, 2.44m

Wind: SW 23mph increasing to 37mph this evening

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: A short Rough chop with the odd 2m wave, the water is pretty clear.

Portland: Rough on the West side and around the Bill. East side is a bit calmer with a 1m swell. The water is fairly clear

Portland Harbour: Wavlets with clear water.

Weymouth Bay: Calm but the water is still holding colour

Chesil Beach forecast: It looks like it could be a good Bass day on the beach today. Conditions are pretty much near perfect for lure fishing the beach until mid afternoon, then the wind will get up too much to be able to cast. If you manage to get out with your bait rods early enough then you have a chance of a number of different species today. The Eastern end of the beach seems to be fishing better for different species with Plaice, Breeam, Gurnard, Bass, Cod, Dabs, Pout, Pollock, Scad and Wrasse all coming from marks between the bird sanctuary and the masonic car park. The other end of the beach seems to be producing better bags of Cod and the bigger fish seem to be coming from there. Not very many Plaice from the normal marks such as Abbotsbury and Cogden, but the number of Whiting coming from there has increased.

Portland: I am hoping to see Bass and Pollock on lures from the Bill later this afternoon and if it does not get too rough to early I will be trying for some Wrasse on soft plastics. You will be able to target all of the species I mentioned on bait as well, but lures will out fish bait 10 to 1 with the exception of the Wrasse.

Portland Harbour: The large tides always bring in decent number of Bass into the harbour. Unfortunatly the areas that I prefer to fish for them are being flushed with Eel Grass coming down from the Fleet as it dies off. So surface lures will be the best option around Hamm Beach and Ferrybridge.

Weymouth Bay: Stone and Pleasure Pier will produce some nice fish and you never know what it will throw up. Garfish, Pollock, Mackerel and Bass plus Flounder and Wrasse.

Guiding:  I have a couple of more sessions available in October mainly for Bass fishing but I might be persuaded to do a bait session for Cod or a late Plaice. As I mentioned earlier there will be a very few Cod or bait fishing days in October and will be based around what I believe are the best tides.
