According to the weather forecast it is going to rain all day today, again. To be honest with the lack of fish at the moment it should give me an excuse to make up some rigs and maybe pour some more soft plastic lures.

I fished on Portland yesterday and even the Wrasse were thin in the ground. I had a walk along Chesil a bit later and talked to quite a few anglers that decided to give it a go. The mainstay of the catch for the Portland end of Chesil was Dogfish and Rockling. When I went along to Abbotsbury it was pretty much the same story. I keep hearing of the odd Plaice being caught, but I have yet to have a single one of those reports confirmed.

Some of you may have seen my article about my trip to River Cottage last week. I am going to be doing some work with the River Cottage team this year and when I can tell you more I will. In the mean time the events team have been very kind and have offered a discount on the courses for Fishing Tails readers, all you need to do is go to River Cottage and use discount code FISHTAILS20 at the checkout. Offer valid until 30th June 2013. For those of you that didn’t see my article it is here.

I have been working on the LRF post that I promised for this week, so it should be up later today.

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: It is going to be up and down all day today, as the wind changes strength and direction. the water is  coloured, but finally starting to clear a bit.

Portland: Waves up to 1m and clearer water.

Portland Harbour: Calm with clear water.

Weymouth Bay: Calm but the water has a bit of colour especially around the harbour entrance.

Chesil Beach forecast: The best you can hope for today are Rockling and Dabs with the odd Whiting still around. It is possible that a Ray or two might show from Seaton or West Bexington.

Portland: There are a few Wrasse feeding and Rockling seem to be plentiful. This evenings tide will be pretty good for a chance of a Pollock at dusk. Lure fishing will produce the most fish.

Portland Harbour: Another area that has gone very quite. All you can really hope to catch from here are Flounder at the moment.

Weymouth Bay: The piers are fishing well for Whiting, both during the day and at night. Plenty of Pout are also being caught with the odd Flounder and Pollock. Rockling are showing up in decent numbers for those looking for different species. Preston is good for Flounder and Whiting.

Poole Harbour: I am hearing more reports of School Bass being caught than Flounders. It looks like the Flounders have moved off to Spawn.

Species Hunt: I think I will create an album to show the different species that I catch this year and see how many different ones I can catch. I know that species hunting is very popular on a number of forums. Why not join me and see what different fish you can catch over the year. I am going to set myself a target of 30 different species. Drop me an email and let me know your targets and how you get on throughout the year. I especially want to see your pictures of some of the more unusual species that you catch.

Guiding & Lessons: I know it is the heart of winter, but now is a good time to think about booking a 1 to 1 lesson or get on one of my fishing workshops. This will give you plenty of time to practice the techniques you learn before the fish turn up again in the spring. Have a look on the guiding link at the top of the page or drop me an email for more details to sean@fishingtails.co.uk
